The diocese of Washington within the Russian American Metropolitanate emerged in the early 1950s as a vicariate of the Metropolitan See of New York, and remained so after the metropolitanate was transformed into the Orthodox Church in America in 1970. In 1981, the Washington diocese was separated into an independent one and at the same time became a primate, in connection with which the First Hierarch of the Church began to be titled Archbishop of Washington.

On April 30, 2005, the New York Diocese was abolished and merged with Washington, but by the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America on July 1, 2009, the latter was again separated from the primate. The Federal District of Columbia and parts of the states of Virginia, Delaware and Maryland were left within the Washington Diocese.
